We will be camping at Pere Marquette State Park in the group/youth camping area. The road to the group camp is to the east of the main park entrance on Hwy 100 just west of the riding stables. Our zipline time is 10:00 am on Saturday and will last approximately two hours. If you are coming just for the zipline adventure you need to be at the Grafton Zipline NO LATER than 9:30 am. We will be patrol cooking for the weekend. If your parent is not going to be at the zipline campout you MUST have a signed waiver signed by your parent/guardian. No exceptions. You can download the form here - zipline waiver form. Cost will be $69 per person. Map to camping area below Map to Grafton Zipline
We are inviting Webelos, and their families, to join Troop 858 for a weekend camping trip September 25-27 at Mark Twain State Park in the special use area. We will start setting up camp around 5:30 or 6:00 on Friday and leave by 9:00 am on Sunday. If Webelos can only make it on Saturday for the day that's fine. We will have some fun activities and will possibly work on some Webelos advancement items if we can coordinate those with the Packs. We will be eating family style. We would suggest 2-3 families join together to make cooking more efficient. If there are Webelos that aren't attending with a family member we can work them in with another family. We should have enough tents from the Troop that the Webelos can share tents instead of camping with the family if they want. Please let Jamie Barnes know how many will be attending from your Pack no later than September 17th. email@example.com Link to Mark Twain State Park Map to special use campsite below:
We will be hiking the Big Piney Trail near Roby, MO May 29-31. We will camp at the Roby Lake Recreation Area Forest Service campground Friday night. The trail is approximately 17 miles in a loop. We will hike about 10 miles on Saturday and then 7-8 miles on Sunday. We will camp at Paddy Creek Recreation Area Forest Service campground Saturday night. Good news is both campgrounds have pit toilets! 🙂 You can find some useful information and a packing list on our Backpacking Info page. Please look at the Troop 858 backpacking info page for a packing list and ideas where to get gear that you will need. Mr. Barnes has enough tents for six scouts. He also has a couple of backpacks scouts can borrow - first come first served. If you have a lightweight backpacking tent please plan on bringing it. You won't need stoves, the adults have enough stoves to boil water.
- Make sure you purchase food for yourself. You will be carrying it so choose carefully. Don't pack too much but don't skimp either. It's a fine line. :-)Purchase a rehydrate in a bag meal for dinner Saturday night and breakfast Sunday morning. A couple of packages of instant oatmeal (just add water kind) works pretty well for breakfast too. Make sure you pack a bowl if you are going to make oatmeal for breakfast. We will NOT be doing any patrol style cooking. You'll also need some sort of trail lunch for Saturday/Sunday plus some snacks - beef jerky, trail mix, peanut butter crackers, etc. Remember it will be warm and chocolate will melt.
- We will be eating somewhere in Rolla, MO on the way down Friday evening so bring some cash for that. Probably $10 will cover it. We will cook breakfast Saturday morning before hitting the trail. Please bring $5 to the May 21st troop meeting for grub money.
- Please fill your water containers prior to leaving the house Friday and make sure the lids are secured tightly so they won't leak. I don't believe there is a water source at Roby Lake unless you want to filter lake water. There is a place to filter/treat water Saturday evening. You only need enough water for one day. Check the backpacking checklist on the troop backpacking page for the suggested amount of water to carry.
- It will take about 2.5 hours of drive time to get to the trailhead. We will do our best to find rides for scouts who's parents aren't going. If you haven't signed up already please let Mr. Barnes know as soon as possible if you intend to participate in the trip.

We will be hiking the 8.5 mile Lewis & Clark trail near the Busch Wildlife Conservation Area on Saturday December 6th. We will start at 8:30 and should be finished up around 1:00-2:00 depending on how fast we hike. This will be a regular hiking trail so sturdy shoes, preferably hiking boots, will be needed. Trekking poles will be useful but not a necessity. This trail can be quite muddy in sections especially after some days of rain. Having a towel or trash bag to cover your seats after the hike might be a good idea. 🙂 This will count as one of the required hikes for the hiking merit badge. Please contact Mr. Barnes or Mr. Miller if you have any questions. The trail-head is just past the large rock pile on Hwy 94 south past Francis Howell H.S. Map to the trail-head below.
Re-charter will continue until December 4th. That leaves 3 more meetings to make sure that your re-charter fee ($24 Scout/Adult) is paid to Mrs. Wiss. There is no meeting on Thanksgiving Day. All adults need to make sure that your Youth protection is up to date as well. Council will not re-charter you if it is not. After Dec. 4th, any individual, Scout or Adult, that has not contacted us to re-charter, will be dropped from the active roster and will need to complete a new application to become active in the Troop again. I will be at this week’s meeting from 6:45 to 7:10 to re-charter, as I have another meeting that I have to attend. Fees can be taken from boy's account but you must see Stacey in person to verify this request If you can't make a meeting by the 4th but want to recharter you can contact Stacey about sending her a check.

We will be hiking the council's 1904 World's Fair trail in Forest Park Saturday November 1st. This will be about 10 miles and will qualify as one of the hikes for the hiking merit badge. Mr. Miller will be teaching the hiking MB at the 10/23/14 troop meeting. We will meet at the parking lot of the Dwight Davis tennis center in Forest Park - please see map below. The hike will begin at approximately 10:00 am. It should take us around 5-7 hours depending on how fast we hike. We will be hiking with some Webelos from various packs on on Saturday. Please make sure you are prepared and are bringing the essentials for a hiking trip. This will be in an urban area so the need for wilderness survival skills/gear will be minimal. 🙂 Make sure you bring a sack lunch! We will be eating along the trail somewhere. If you complete the entire trail you will be eligible to receive a nifty patch. Hike sign up form link. Please fill out only one per family with total number going on the hike. Link to trail description Please let Mr. Barnes know if you have any questions
We will be doing the NRA shotgun certification at the 10/23/14 troop meeting. Only those who have signed up may take this class. Those Scouts who have not paid for the class materials will have to pay for them at this meeting ( $8). The camp-out is only Friday night - we will depart Saturday evening. No patrol cooking due to the number of scouts that will be attending. Mr. Haberberger is the grub-master for the weekend. Please pay your $15 grub money to him. Please bring your own shotgun shells if you didn't pay Mr. Boyer to pick some up for you. They should say something like "target load" on the box. If you have questions about purchasing shells please ask Mr. Boyer prior to purchasing your own. The shooting campout will be held at the Bench Rest Rifle club in Wright City.
